National experts from Best Friends Animal Society offer free workshops to save more shelter dogs and cats
KANAB, Utah - National animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society will be in the New Jersey communities of Edison and Madison between Monday, Aug. 19 and Thursday, Aug. 22 offering free, informative work sessions to help local animal rescue groups and municipal animal shelters save more lives.
Workshops will be conducted by Best Friends Animal Behavioral Consultant, Sherry Woodard (CPDT-KA), Sam Wike (CPDT-KA), and Best Friends' No More Homeless Pets® Network Regional Specialists Lezlie Sage and Linda Gage.
"Best Friends was asked by local rescue group, Sammy's Hope, to come share our experience and expertise from almost 30 years of operating the nation's largest no-kill companion animal sanctuary, as well as working on the ground with grassroots groups and shelters across the country. We realized this would be an excellent opportunity to open it up the animal rescue community in this region of New Jersey. We're thrilled to be sharing resources. This is all about connecting the local groups and people, and building a bigger team in order to help more rescued cats and dogs go home," said Sherry Woodard, Best Friends' animal behavior consultant.
In addition to Sammy's Hope, which works closely with Edison Animal Shelter, the Best Friends team will be consulting with staff at New Jersey's Monmouth County SPCA, Liberty Humane Society and Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, plus Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons in Long Island.
"Whether someone is working at a shelter or rescue group, volunteers, fosters or simply has an interest in working with homeless animals, these workshops are designed to help each person attending build on the knowledge they already possess and enhance their abilities to save the lives of shelter dogs and cats," Woodard said.
In Edison, sessions will be offered 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19 and 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20 at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center, 97 Sunfield Ave.
In Madison, a session will be offered 6:30 p.m. to 9:30p.m. in the St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center's community room, 574 Woodland Avenue.
Workshop topics include: body language and behavior assessment, dog social skills, working with shy cats, and an overview of Best Friends' Canines with Careers program.
