Breed Rescue

Best of the Breed (Rescuers)

The best dogs and cats in the world (in our humble opinion!) are mixes. But, if your heart is set on a particular breed, then consider adopting one from a reputable breed rescuer like Lillie Goodrich.

Lillie Goodrich of Glen Highland Farms is a breed rescuer who helps shelters and sanctuaries by fostering and finding homes for their pure breeds. When you adopt from a rescuer like Lillie, you're helping your local shelter, too.

After attending a "How to Start an Animal Sanctuary" workshop at Best Friends, Lillie saw a way to help. "I saw two Border collies at Best Friends, and your adoption coordinator told me that Border collies are difficult to place. So I offered to start taking these dogs back east, since there are so many great Border collie homes there."

Lillie started with Snaps, a stray, Raven, who'd come to Best Friends from a shelter, and Elijah, Katie, and Princess, who had been placed in homes, but were returned due to their high energy. Lillie offered to take all five and find good homes for them.

Over the years since then, Lillie has transformed her home rescue operation into a complete sanctuary. In the last two years, she has found homes for over 200 Border collies and mixes. "In our new facility," she explains, "We can help up to 150 dogs each year, with about 20 living onsite at any given time."

"We always look forward to Best Friends Border collies because they are wonderful and very adoptable. We also run a learning vacation camp for dog lovers, with the proceeds going to rescue work, plus we run an inner city kids program. The kids spend their summers working with the rescue dogs and learning to be more caring, healing some of their own traumas. The kids are really transformed at the Farm."

There are hundreds of breed rescue groups across the country. For help finding one in your area, please contact the Best Friends Animal Help Department.
