Living with Diabetes

Special Feature

Happily Ever After

Derek Wade needed to find a home for Henry. And he was prepared to do whatever it took.

Derek had rescued the fox terrier, who was scheduled to be put down at the local shelter because he had diabetes. Derek tried to take care of him, but he hadn't realized at first about those twice-daily shots. "After a few months, we knew that we just couldn't give him all the attention he needed."

But Derek wasn't going to give up on Henry. He placed ads for months, and contacted several rescue groups, but no homes came forward. Then he called Best Friends, saying he'd be happy to deliver Henry to any home in the United States at his expense. And he'd even prepay a full year of medication.

Word went out all over the country through the Best Friends Network, and soon enough we heard back from the Menshouse family in Ashland, Kentucky.

"Our 14-year-old son, Clark, is also diabetic," explained his mom, Debbie. "They share a unique bond, and Henry is currently enjoying his first snow. It's really a miracle how he came to live with us!"
