Executive Director

Maya Richmond
Maya Richmond is the executive director at Animal Welfare Association (AWA). Before joining AWA in 2009, she was the director of operations and program development for the Maryland SPCA in Baltimore. She enjoys designing programs that directly improve the welfare of animals in the community.

At the MDSPCA, she developed a rehoming and pet retention program, high-volume spay/neuter clinics and earned income ventures, and she also designed new spaces. She especially enjoys working with her team on staff development. At AWA, she has worked to develop sustainable programs and fundraising so that AWA can do more for the community, including comprehensive pet programs in the city of Camden. They have doubled program output and recently were instrumental in the building of AWA’s new spay/neuter and wellness clinic. The new clinic replaces their 1972 Animal Birth Control Clinic.

Maya shares her home with two cats, two dogs, an understanding husband and their young daughter.
