Ask your state legislators to help dogs via model insurance act

Success!

UPDATE: On November 18, 2022, the National Council of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) voted UNANIMOUSLY to adopt a model act to protect dog owners from breed-based insurance restrictions. Now, send your state's NCOIL member(s) a message to say thanks!

Thank legislators for supporting a model act for preventing breed restrictions.

Legislation is needed to protect pet-owning consumers as 69 million U.S. families own dogs and 52% of homeowners surveyed acquired a pet after their policy began.

Studies have shown that breed does not dictate behavior. As such, homeowners and renters insurance companies should not be permitted to refuse to issue or renew a policy simply because of a dog’s breed or mix.

Several states — including New York, Nevada, and most recently, Arizona — have passed laws on this topic; the NCOIL model act would help other states pass similar legislation.

TAKE ACTION: Ask your state's legislator(s)* that are members of NCOIL to support this model act! Use the form on this page to send a pre-filled message (customization encouraged).
