Best Friends super adoption event: Brooklyn edition

By Julie Castle

Best Friends puts on some darn good events. Through the years, we’ve developed events that raise millions of dollars for other animal welfare organizations (Strut Your Mutt), inspire action around the nation long after they’re over (the Best Friends National Conference) and save thousands of lives all across the country in the space of a weekend (super adoption events).

Super adoptions have become banner events for Best Friends — so much so that the public, rescue groups and shelters in Utah, Los Angeles and New York excitedly await the biannual events. They are as much a celebration of pets from shelters as they are a way to find great homes for dogs and cats. It’s a celebration of lifesaving, and the entire community is invited. And the community always rises to the challenge to save those lives.

We’ve come a long way since that first super adoption event in Los Angeles in 1999. The event has grown dramatically, and 400-plus adoptions over three days is no longer a dream result. It’s expected, and we expect those numbers this weekend in Brooklyn.

We’ve done super adoption events in the New York metro area before (in New Jersey and in White Plains) but this weekend we’re taking the city — at the brand new Brooklyn Expo Center in the Greenpoint neighborhood.

We’ve raised our adoption goals as well. With 800 pets in attendance, we’re expecting to see more than 400 animals adopted (which would be a record for the Big Apple). We’re counting on upwards of 15,000 people to attend and help us reach that goal.

The success of the super adoption event in New York will be another step in the right direction as New York City heads toward no-kill status. Our foster program is already helping hundreds of animals find their forever homes. They’re both critical pieces of the puzzle to help New York continue to make progress.

So if you’re in the New York area, be sure to attend the Best Friends super adoption event this weekend. There will be a fun, festival-like atmosphere with food, music, games and, of course, more than 800 beautiful dogs and cats looking to be someone’s new best friend.
