Location: Remote - Continental United States

Hiring Range: This position’s hiring range is anticipated to be $90,000 to $100,000 annually, depending on experience, plus great benefits!

Summary: Are you a seasoned social media leader who gets results and doesn't believe the internet can ever have too many cat videos? Then this social media role helping to inspire more to care and end the killing of cats and dogs in America’s shelters might be the job for you. The Associate Director, National Social Media, leads Best Friends Animal Society’s social media strategy across national social channels and platforms with a focus on positivity, supporter engagement, brand awareness, and inspiring more people to take lifesaving actions. In this role, you’ll serve as the organizational social media subject matter expert and oversee the strategy, tools, and execution for existing and emerging social channels within the organization’s digital and content strategies. Each day, you’ll lead efforts to tell positive stories that ignite the imaginations of our incredible supporters, allowing them to witness firsthand the profound impact of their kindness through captivating storytelling. You’ll oversee the engagement and management of Best Friends online communities of 3+ million animal lovers and manage a remote team of content specialists, interns, contractors, and volunteers. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop overall social media content marketing strategy and goals for the organization to engage followers, reach new relevant audiences, and support mission-aligned goals to contribute to the organizational goal to Save Them All.

  • Lead video-first social content strategy to capitalize on platform growth opportunities including TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram. Steward collaborative relationships with content creators across the organization and within influencer program.

  • Manage, coach and mentor team of social media specialists, interns, volunteers and contractors; oversee their workloads and assignments, manage their performance and ensure they have the resources to succeed.

  • Work collaboratively with digital, creative, marketing, advocacy, lifesaving centers and corporate partners teams to sync with other department promotions for optimal multichannel campaign performance.

  • Oversee Influencer marketing program, providing guidance, supporting cross-departmental collaboration, and reporting to leadership.

  • Establish organizational best practices for social engagement, leading the creative development and implementation of social campaigns in support of interdepartmental programs and events.

  • Work closely with lifesaving center marketing team to align national and local social media strategy. Partner with local marketing teams to build holistic organizational social media presence.

  • Engage with members and potential supporters in positive, thoughtful online conversations about the organization, our campaigns, web stories, events and videos.

  • Oversee social response library and lead social messaging in crisis situations. Navigate responses to difficult/challenging interactions, and work alongside the PR team to craft responses in dealing with sensitive subjects and emergencies.

  • Work closely with digital fundraising team to grow and support organic social revenue and convert followers to supporters through multichannel campaign integration and new giving opportunities.

  • Track, measure and report overall impact of social media campaigns to key stakeholders and share overall program trends to leadership.

  • Oversee vendors, tools and functionalities that help further the impact of social across all communication. Make recommendations on how to develop and advance the organization’s social media capabilities, including new strategies and opportunities.

Skills and Experience:

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent experience

  • 5+ years of professional experience in social media marketing and fundraising

  • Expert knowledge of Facebook, X/Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, and Twitch and social media best practices

  • Demonstrated experience in managing direct reports and vendors/contractors

  • Gifted content creator with strong experience in creating all kinds of content for social media, including written, video, photography, graphics and live content

  • Strong understand of social media KPIs and how to use data for decision making

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively, build positive relationships, communicate clearly and manage conflict constructively

  • Meticulous attention to detail

  • Ability to solve problems creatively and collaboratively

  • Self-starter with ability to operate at a hands-on detailed level, take the lead on complicated projects and anticipate strategies through to the end

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to anticipate needs, innovate, multi-task and excel in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment

  • Ability to quickly adapt to new channels, technologies and trends, and determine which are best aligned with our goals

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods of time working on the computer with repetitive typing, arm and hand motion.  

  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.

  • Must have a valid driver's license for at least 3 years, ability to qualify to be added to Best Friends insurance, ability to travel and/or drive on behalf of Best Friends, including overnight stays, when needed.   

  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule; position includes weekends, nights, and holiday work.

  • Possible exposure to dogs, cats and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status when traveling to onsite locations.
