Saturday, October 5

8:30 – 10:00 a.m.
Hike to the Handprint Caves

(Max attendance: 20)

The handprint cave hike starts near one of the Sanctuary horse pastures. It is a mile and a half round-trip. On this hike, you will visit ancient ruins with pictographs of hand prints that are still preserved today. The hike is considered easy to moderate as it is a relatively flat, sandy trail with a few uphill spots and partial shade at times. It is an out-and-back trail, so you are welcome to turn around at any time if you need to split from the group. Due to the fragility of the site, dogs are not allowed on this hike. For your comfort, we recommend wearing closed-toe walking shoes and a hat. Bring a water bottle and sunscreen and meet outside the Best Friends Welcome Center, where restrooms and a water dispenser are available.

8:30 – 10:00 a.m.
Tour Best Friends Animal Sanctuary with a Founder

(Max attendance: 12)

Join one of the Best Friends co-founders to learn about the geography and history of the Sanctuary. We will be making special stops at Angels Rest, a place of remembrance at the Sanctuary, and the newly planted Gratitude Garden, a quiet oasis that honors donors who have made gifts to the animals. The shuttle bus (equipped to accommodate special needs) will pick us up at Angel Village at 8:30 a.m. Restrooms are available prior to the tour.

Best Friends Animal Clinic Tour and Pig Spa Experience

(Max attendance: 13)

We'll begin our tour at Horse Haven in the lower canyon to get a behind-the-scenes look at our pig spa. After being placed under anesthesia, the pigs receive the full spa treatment — tusk and hoof trimming, teeth scaling, blood work and skin care. We'll then head up to the Best Friends Animal Clinic. Opened in 2014, our state-of-the-art animal care clinic is responsible for the well-being of hundreds of animals at the Sanctuary. It was most recently featured on the TV show “Animal ER Live.” Watch our amazing medical team perform physical exams, surgeries and other procedures, and see how the clinic stands out from other animal clinics around the country. Meet at Horse Haven. Restrooms and water are available.

Please note: This is a working day for the medical staff. If seeing animals being cared for in a medical setting makes you uncomfortable, you may want to choose a different activity.
