Seven years ago, Shelley Thayer stepped in as executive director at Cat Depot in Sarasota, Florida. During the first two months, she doubled the adoption rate, and during the first year, fosters and volunteers quadrupled. In the years to follow, an education center, medical facility and full service hospital were added. Progressive programs remain at the forefront and include a TNVR and community cat program, critter camp and innovative programs for every cat’s medical and mental well-being.
Prior to Cat Depot, Shelley worked with Best Friends Animal Society, assisting with rescue operations for Hurricane Katrina, Pets Alive, the Reno rabbit rescue, the Pahrump Great Kitty Rescue and logistics for the Lebanon rescue. She developed and co-authored Best Friends’ first manual on rapid-response procedures, was circulation manager of Best Friends’ magazine and later introduced the 25th anniversary campaign called Give the Gift.
Before entering the nonprofit world, Shelley was co-founder and CEO of Super Marketing, Inc., a national corporation based in Irvine, California, specializing in packaged goods, new brand introductions, and special events for corporations such as Best Foods, General Mills, Pepsi, Nike, and McCormick and Company, Inc. She was co-owner and operations manager of Tooned-In School Menus, which published four million free school menus monthly to 200 school districts in 40 states. Shelley also worked as vice president of Field Marketing, Inc., a national marketing corporation based in Chicago, Illinois.
During Shelley's marketing career, she remained connected to humane organizations as both a volunteer and fundraiser. She rallied for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, domestic animal rehabilitation, big cat rescue and therapeutic riding for children.
