Beckey Reiter

Executive Director

Beckey Reiter
Beckey Reiter has served in the animal control and sheltering field for 30 years. She is currently the director of Boone County Animal Care and Control, in Burlington, Kentucky, a position she has held since 1994. Beckey served 12 years on the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's Animal Control Advisory Board and 20-plus years with the Kentucky Animal Care and Control Association. In addition, she was an instructor for the Kentucky Horse Council's livestock cruelty investigation classes.

In 2012, Boone County made the commitment to end euthanasia in their shelter. Boone County Animal Care and Control implemented programs designed to reduce the number of animals received at the shelter and increase lifesaving. Beckey began working with Target Zero to formulate a plan to reach a 90 percent or more live release rate, which has since grown to an area coalition of eight municipal shelters and the area development district.

The coalition has been successful in making ordinance changes in three municipalities, securing funding, and beginning community cat diversion programs in the region. The result is an increase in lifesaving since those changes were made in October 2016.
