Humane Society of Midland County

I’ve been an animal lover since I was a child. As a college student, the unexpected passing of my best friend left me the owner of a two-year-old cat, and with him began my passion for animal welfare. Because my cat had been declawed and suffered from complications from it, my eyes were opened to the plight of declawed cats and what it meant to be an advocate for them. After getting married in 2006, my husband was deployed to Japan. That summer, I got a job at the Kent County Animal Shelter. It will forever be the summer that changed my life. I soon moved to Japan with my husband and found that there was an all-volunteer-based animal shelter on the Navy base. Through volunteering, I found a passion to advocate for military families and their pets. I knew I had to get into animal welfare work after moving to Midland. The local shelter still utilized a gas chamber for euthanasia. Very few animals were leaving the building alive. I met avolunteer for the Humane Society of Midland County (HSMC) and found it was a foster-based group. In January of 2011, I started a position at the Humane Society of Midland County. My husband’s career has taken us all over the country, but I’ve remained on staff at HSMC working remotely as its social media and marketing manager. The work we’ve accomplished over the last 11 years is astounding and each year I see us achieve a little more. We are small, but we accomplish big things every day that most places say are impossible, and for that I am proud.
