Community Cat Project Manager

Desiree Triste-Aragon
Desiree Triste-Aragon is the Community Cats Project manager for Best Friends Animal Society. She has helped launch Community Cats Projects across the country in locations such as Tucson, Arizona, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. These three-year programs are partnerships with PetSmart Charities and local municipal shelters in an effort to humanely reduce the population of community (aka stray or free-roaming) cats via trap-neuter-return (TNR) and decrease the killing of cats in shelters.

In the cities where these programs have been implemented, municipal shelters have seen a dramatic reduction in the number of cats killed. Albuquerque now has one of the lowest kill rates for cats in an open-admission shelter serving a major metropolitan area, and Tucson's save rate for cats in 2015 and 2016 was 90% percent.

Desiree received her B.A. at New Mexico State University and her M.A. at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
