Dr. Maria Sabio-Solacito joined the Department of Animal Care & Control (DACC) as a veterinarian in 2008, and in 2012 was promoted to senior veterinarian to oversee all medical operations for DACC’s seven animal care centers. Under her leadership, the medical programs and practices were standardized and made current with the best practices in the industry. She was instrumental in the development of a shared leadership model among the medical, operations, and animal behavior and enrichment divisions. When the department reorganized in 2019, Dr. Solacito focused on North County medical operations and developing medical outreach programs, which have been integral in the promotion of DACC as a community resource for the pet-owning public. In 2020, Dr. Solacito became a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) and was appointed by California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, to serve on the California Veterinary Medical Board. In the past two years, her work on Los Angeles County’s anti-racism, diversity and inclusion efforts have been brought to DACC’s Equity Action Team to ensure that DACC continues to lead in these efforts. As West County director, Dr. Solacito oversees operations at the Carson/Gardena and Agoura animal care centers, as well as DACC’s volunteer program, public information office, e-operations, DACC’s two communication centers and the adoption partner program.
