Zarah Hedge, DVM, MPH, DACVPM, DABVP
Vice President of Shelter Medicine and Chief Medical Officer
Zarah Hedge, DVM, MPH, DACVPM, DABVP (shelter medicine practice), graduated from Western University of Health Sciences in 2009. She completed shelter medicine internship and three-year shelter medicine residency program at the Oregon Humane Society in conjunction with Oregon State University. She received her master's in public health with the University of Minnesota in 2013 and board certification in veterinary preventive medicine in 2014. After completing her residency, she worked as a veterinarian at San Diego Humane Society for two years before becoming an assistant professor of shelter medicine at the Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine. She received board certification in shelter medicine (ABVP) in 2017. In the summer of 2019, she once again joined the San Diego Humane Society as chief medical officer and vice president of shelter medicine. In this role, she oversees a medical team of more than 100 staff at four different locations in San Diego County. She also works as a contract veterinarian for Rural Area Veterinary Services (RAVS).
