Like all the birds at Parrot Garden, Jeb Stuart is eagerly awaiting Christmas Day. That's because the caregivers make sure the birds have a very happy holiday. For breakfast all the birds will get a special fruitcake/birdie bread (recipe below). After everyone has eaten their fill of the delicious treat, every bird will get a new toy, wrapped in brown paper, that they can open themselves. We make sure that Jeb's toys don't have any dust or other things that he could breathe in and make himself sicker.
Parrot Garden Holiday Birdie Bread:
2 cups mashed sweet potatoes
1 pomegranate seeds (or 1/4 cup juice)
1 bag of cranberries, simmered in water or orange juice until they just pop
1 cup walnuts, pecans or almonds
Double recipe of cornbread from the back of the cornmeal container, minus salt and sugar
Instead of milk or water as the liquid in the recipe, use orange juice, cranberry juice or pomegranate juice.
Bake as directed. Cool, cube and serve! This freezes well, so your birds can have a special treat whenever you'd like.
