Shamika fell in love at the Dog Daze adoption day.

Best Friends helped organize the one-day for the South Los Angeles city shelter on Saturday, August 20. And it seems lots of other people fell in love, too. In all, 116 dogs and cats found new homes -- many times the number on an average Saturday.

Shamika's new love is an older Westie mix who may soon have some health problems. But Shamika decided that he was the right dog for her and that she could happily relate to any of the health issues that might develop.

Another family said they'd been to shelters and adoption events all over the city, looking for the right German shepherd for them. And they finally found their "dream dog" at the South L.A. shelter.

"We wanted to create a family-friendly environment at the shelter," said Francis Battista of Best Friends, "and to invite the public in to see what beautiful animals are there."
