Somebody's watching over...
Feathered Friends, the bird department here at the sanctuary, has a new bird. This is Jo, a Goffin’s cockatoo. He came to us from a bird rescue that had pretty much run out of room, and then some. If he resembles a guardian angel when he spreads his wings, well, maybe there’s a reason for that.
Jo was on his way to Best Friends, riding in a carrier in the back of a car. Several other birds, also in carriers, hung out with him. All were traveling in some scary conditions. High winds can be treacherous. Even if you drive carefully, severe wind can slide a car around the road. Especially a slick road. That’s exactly what happened to Jo’s vehicle. A strong blast pushed the car across the slush-covered highway. Once the car hit the shoulder, it began to tip over.
The windows shattered on impact and two of the carriers, including Jo’s, slid out onto the highway and into the snow while the car ground to a stop. A man driving an RV was the first to run over and offer help. Before he could even ask if they were okay, the people in the car asked him to get the birds! Remarkably, nobody was hurt, neither person nor animal. If you ask Jo how that was possible, he just winks at you as if he knows something you don’t.
Jo is doing just fine now, as are all the other animals who traveled with him that day. He loves to meet anyone who drops by. As a side note, cockatoos aren’t for everyone. They can require near-constant care. Learn more about parrots by visiting the Best Friends Pet Care Library.Written by David Dickson. Photos by Troy Snow.
