Los Amigos del Refugio de Animales de Westerly (FOWAS) fueron creados por un grupo de voluntarios del refugio para brindar apoyo financiero para la salud, el bienestar y la adopción exitosa de los animales del refugio, así como para apoyar el desarrollo de jóvenes voluntarios interesados en carreras en bienestar animal. El objetivo era crear un mecanismo para recaudar fondos que complementaran los fondos existentes proporcionados por la ciudad de Westerly, Rhode Island, y que pudieran utilizarse para mejorar la atención médica, el entrenamiento y la socialización de los animales del refugio, cruciales para el éxito de las adopciones, y para otorgar becas a estudiantes de último año de secundaria que deseen continuar su formación en bienestar animal.
