Every day, homeless dogs and cats are killed in Utah simply because they don’t have a place to call home. But you can help change that.

Best Friends has always believed that collaboration is the key to saving more lives, which is why we created the NKUT (No-Kill Utah) initiative. Thanks to people like you, along with our NKUT coalition members, we've made amazing progress to end the killing of healthy or treatable cats and dogs in shelters, but there's still work to do throughout the state of Utah.

With your help, we can end the killing in animal shelters throughout Utah and make the state a safe place for all cats and dogs to call home. We'll show you how.

The latest in Utah

As of August 2025, Utah is 1160 lives away from being a no-kill state, with 56 out of 59 shelters already at no-kill. But there's still work to do. The key to Utah County reaching no-kill is saving the lives of cats, specifically community cats.

In February 2024, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox signed a historic declaration in support of Utah pets. Gov. Cox wants Utah to be a no-kill state, and we need Utah County to become no-kill for the state to achieve that goal. Roughly 4,300 cats entered Utah County shelters in 2024, and only 60% made it out alive. But if other counties in Utah can become no-kill, Utah County can, too.

Community cats live and thrive outdoors, rather than indoors as pets. And they are among the most at-risk animals in shelters in Utah.

Research has shown that the most effective and humane way of helping these cats is through trap-neuter-vaccinate-return (TNVR) programs. By implementing TNVR, community cats continue to live outdoors after they’ve been spayed or neutered and vaccinated for rabies, keeping them out of shelters and freeing up resources for other pets in dire need of sheltering and care.

TNVR not only saves lives, but it is also the only humane and effective way to reduce community cat populations and end nuisance behaviors associated with cats reproducing. This proven approach ensures that cats in the community won't have more kittens, and that means fewer cats entering shelters.

Spaying and neutering: Key in saving Utah's cats

Best Friends will continue to provide spay/neuter and vaccination support for the community of Utah County through our Orem clinic as well as provide resources for the community.

We are currently scheduling surgeries for unowned, outdoor cats in Utah County. This program is a lifesaving effort aimed at supporting outdoor cats and reducing shelter admissions. Cats will be ear-tipped at the time of surgery to show they've been spayed or neutered. If you are a Utah County resident who would like to schedule a spay/neuter surgery for an outdoor cat, please make an appointment. Best Friends encourages you to review and comply with any applicable laws relating to your care and treatment of cats in your community.

Our spay/neuter clinic is located at 845 N 100 W #107 in Orem, Utah, open by appointment only. Questions? Please text or call us at 385-832-7422 or send an email to utahcountytnr@bestfriends.org.

Looking to spay or neuter a pet cat?

Spaying or neutering your pet is one of the greatest gifts you can provide your animal, your family, and your community, and it is critical to help make Utah a no-kill state.

We understand that sometimes people prefer to enjoy cats in places outside of their yard, so we've compiled a list of humane deterrents and a video with helpful ideas.

Support change for homeless pets in Utah

Use your voice to advocate for homeless pets in Utah so that every cat and dog can safely find their way out of shelters.

In February 2024, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox signed a historic declaration in support of Utah pets. Gov. Cox declared 2024 No-Kill Shelter Year in Utah — a commitment on a government level for the state to save every pet possible and reach no-kill. You, too, can pledge your support and commit to helping us save every pet possible in the state of Utah.

The goal of ending killing in shelters is called no-kill

A 90% save rate for animals entering a shelter is a meaningful and common-sense benchmark for measuring lifesaving progress.

About NKUT

NKUT (No-Kill Utah) an initiative led by Best Friends that brings together passionate individuals, city shelters, and a group of animal welfare organizations to end the killing of dogs and cats in shelters throughout the state of Utah.

In 2016, Best Friends committed to bringing the whole country to no-kill by 2025, and while incredible progress has been made, we need your help now more than ever to get across the finish line.

Achieving no-kill is a collaboration between shelters and their community, so the first step is for individuals to understand the progress being made in their own community and learn how they can help.

Our plan is straightforward: Provide spay/neuter services where they are needed most so that fewer animals enter shelters and increase adoptions so that more animals are placed in loving homes. Working together, we can Save Them All.

To become a member of the No-Kill Utah Coalition, you'll first need to sign up to become a network partner. Once you become a network partner in Utah, you will automatically become a member of the No-Kill Utah Coalition.
