Fernando Diaz

Fernando Diaz is a Manager of Operations with the National Embed Program at Best Friends Animal Society. He has over 15 years of experience in the animal welfare industry, having worked with numerous shelters, rescues, and other animal organizations throughout the country.

Fernando is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC), a Certified Shelter Behavior Specialist (CSBS) with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), and a certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) with the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT). Additionally, he is a professional member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT).

Fernando has served as a board member-at-large for the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), collaborating with international partners to create shelter certification exams and other education opportunities. As the former President of the Board of Directors for Shelter Playgroup Alliance (SPA), Fernando supported national partnerships, set strategic priorities, and contributed to organizational initiatives, while mentoring learners enrolled in educational programs.

Prior to joining Best Friends, Fernando focused on developing education and support for animal welfare professionals and organizations, helping to improve processes such as pathway planning and removing barriers to animal movement. He has in-depth knowledge of developing best practice guidelines and has co-authored a publication on assessing and managing safe canine behavior.

When home, Fernando spends his time with his wife and pets. They have 4 dogs: 2 hounds, a pocket pittie, and a sweet lab. They also have a spunky, former street cat from Oakland and several fish tanks. Fernando also likes exercising his green thumb and is continuously adding plants to the household.
