Location: Remote within the continental United States

Hiring Range: This position’s hiring range is anticipated to be $70,000 to $80,000 annually, depending on experience, plus great benefits!

Recruiter phone screens will occur the week of November 11th.

Position Summary: The Digital Organizing Strategist is responsible for supporting the organizing effort by implementing distributed and digital strategies that develop grassroots leadership. This work will entail expanding our people power through creating and executing a digital organizing plan that meets advocate recruitment and cultivation goals, implementing digital organizing tactics on multiple platforms, and supporting campaigns to advance Best Friends’ grassroots advocacy efforts. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with grassroots digital team, manage public-facing legislative action alert content including the sourcing, editing, coding, and distribution of alerts, executing against rigorous time-sensitive deadlines.  

  • Identify opportunities to improve and streamline existing content and alert processes, creating new guidelines and SOPs where applicable.  

  • Report and interpret key advocacy outreach metrics including email and action alert performance, working closely with team to adapt future digital strategy accordingly. Review evolving and emerging trends in digital advocacy to evaluate for usefulness and effectiveness.  

  • Develop issue- and audience-specific campaign strategies to recruit, educate, and activate citizens across all 50 states and grow a base of committed activists to support Best Friends’ mission. Work with senior manager and director of grassroots advocacy to foster community-specific strategies. 

  • Manage production of digital campaigns, conceptualizing the effective deployment of tactics such as email, SMS/text, call scripts, social media, and other digital grassroots advocate tools. 

  • Work collaboratively with digital marketing and legislative teams to manage an online strategy that enhances Best Friend's ability to grow its advocacy base and engage supporters. 

  • Work with data teams to identify, track, and integrate grassroots volunteers and advocates into key communications databases to support 360 views of organization’s supporters.  

  • Collaborate with digital and IT to identify, enhance, and implement digital tools that will help engage/mobilize volunteers and support grassroots advocacy efforts.  

  • Work collaboratively with Sr. Strategist Advocacy Communications to ensure all advocate engagement, digital content, and communications are on brand and leveraged fully for action conversions.  

  • Continually evaluate existing strategies and make recommendations for adjustments based on evolving or emerging trends and tools in digital organizing. Generate reports and analysis of organizing efforts for organizational improvement and understanding. 

  • Other duties as assigned.  

Skills and Experience: 

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in distributed or digital organizing or campaigning (distributed campaign technology and advocacy or political organizing experience strongly preferred) or combination of experience and pertinent degrees in the following areas, Political Science, Government, Communications, or Marketing.

  • Hands-on experience with CMS and digital organizing tools including, but not limited to Blackbaud, Drupal, ControlShift, Mailchimp, and Phone to Action. Other digital engagement platform experience a plus.

  • Knowing some basic HTML/CSS also a plus. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.

  • Project management experience, including managing projects, business relationships with internal clients, external vendors, solution providers and contractors. 

  • Prior experience in digital advertising and marketing experience is a plus.

  • Strong analytical skills with experience defining, measuring and testing digital metrics (email, social, web, etc.). 

  • Experience integrating grassroots organizing and online/digital advocacy. Grassroots, issue based, or candidate campaign experience is not required, but would be beneficial in this role as well as an understanding of the legislative process.

  • Ability to develop and implement field plans, track/monitor/assess progress, troubleshoot and adapt as needed. 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively, build positive relationships, and manage conflict constructively. 

  • Ability to operate at a hands-on detailed level in addition to strategic thinking. 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Ability to anticipate needs, innovate, problem solve, multi-task and excel in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, sitting, arm, and hand motion. 

  • Ability to periodically travel away from designated work location on behalf of the organization for off-site meetings and other related efforts. Travel is expected to be up to 20%

  • Ability to work in the presence of both cats and dogs, including large numbers of cats and dogs as in a shelter setting. 

  • Must have a valid driver's license for at least 3 years, ability to qualify to be added to Best Friends insurance, ability to travel and/or drive on behalf of Best Friends, including overnight stays, when needed.
