Center Closure:

Our Pet Adoption Center in SoHo will be closed to the public for renovations June 4th through mid-August. Cat and kitten adoptions will still be happening at our temporary Brooklyn location beginning June 8th as well as online.

You can visit us at 232 Varet Street in Brooklyn, 7 days a week from 11am-7pm.

Dogs and puppies will be available to adopt virtually by filling out an online application. See our adoption page for more info.

During this time, our Adventure Buddies program will be on pause.

What services does Best Friends New York City offer?

Best Friends in New York City is working collaboratively with animal rescue groups, city shelters, and passionate individuals who are all dedicated to saving the lives of cats and dogs in New York City shelters. We provide pet adoption services for dogs and cats, foster programs, volunteer opportunities, and community support. What are the hours for Best Friends' New York City location?

The Best Friends Pet Adoption Center in New York is open seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. No appointment needed, walk-ins are welcome. So come meet some amazing dogs and cats — we look forward to helping you find your new best friend!

Do I need an appointment to visit?

You do not need an appointment to visit the animals! Please drop by any time during open hours. Adoption counselors will be available to help match you with your ideal pet, as well as provide suggestions, guide you to resources, and answer questions. How do I adopt from Best Friends New York City?

Browse adoptable pets on our website or visit our New York City center to meet them in person. Spend time with the animals and our adoption counselors can help you find the right match. Once you've chosen your pet, you'll fill out an application and have a meeting with an adoption counselor to make it official. All pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, and same-day adoptions are often possible. Best of all, when you give a dog or cat a home, you're making space in a New York City shelter for another pet in need.

What are the adoption fees at Best Friends New York City?

Adoption fees for adult dogs are $100 (puppies 6 months and under are $150). Adoption fees for adult cats are $100 (kittens 6 months and under are $150). Fees cover spay/neuter, vaccinations, a microchip, and a health check. Special promotions: All pets 7+ years old have fees waived. Veterans and active military members receive a 20% discount with proper ID. Two for one: Adopt two kittens (6 months or under) for the price of one. Check our website for current promotions. Does Best Friends' New York City location accept owner surrenders?

Best Friends' New York City location is unable to accept owner surrenders unless they were previously adopted from one of our adoption centers. Please contact us to discuss your options. We can provide resources to help you keep your pet at home, and we can refer you to local network partners if surrendering is the best path forward and we're unable to accept your animal. No need to sign up beforehand! Just stop in on Thursday (232 Varet St, Brooklyn NY) and we'll match you with a cat, get you registered in our system, give you all the supplies you'll need, and you'll be off with your new weekend best friend!
