Our "Best Friend" is a weekly installment to honor just a few of our outstanding Best Friends LA volunteers. This is your chance to get to know some of the shining stars in the Best Friends LA volunteer program! Volunteers are either nominated by Best Friends LA staff or other volunteers in our program. If you would like to volunteer, e-mail the Best Friends LA Volunteer Department at volunteerLA@bestfriends.org.

Bill P. - honored September 29

Bill, tell us.....

What programs and projects do you volunteer with at Best Friends LA?
I choose to work primarily in the adoptions department: I really enjoy matching the right people with the right pet. No better feeling than knowing that a pet has a wonderful new home!

Why do you choose to volunteer with Best Friends LA?

My wife and I have donated to Best Friends for years now, and I know once I retired it would be the first place I approached as a volunteer.

How long have you been a Best Friends LA volunteer?

I retired in May, and began as a dog-walking volunteer in June before moving to Adoptions.

What type of fun stuff do you do when you're not volunteering?
Since retiring from Home Depot, after 23 years as member of the west coast merchandising team, I have fallen into a nice pattern of activity. I start my mornings with a walk with my dog, Emma: we hike in the hills near our home about 5 miles each day. Then each day varies between my list of “honey do’s”, gardening, house, and of course 3 - 5 days a week at Best Friends. I’ve also started binge-watching Breaking Bad…and of course there is USC Football. So as you can see I have a full schedule.

Do you have a favorite story to share about an experience volunteering with Best Friends LA?
I don’t really have any one day that stands out yet…each day is as rewarding as the next.

Do you have any pets?
We currently have four cats - Winky, Bob, Lucy & Ricky, and then there’s the queen of the castle our dog Emma. Emma is approximately 11 years old, and is a mixed-breed black Lab want-to-be. We’ve been adopting rescues for decades and once had 5 dogs and 2 cats at one time. We would love to have multiple dogs now but Emma will not allow it.

What others are saying about Bill:
“Bill works with the adoption team by helping clients view animals and processing the adoptions. He's a great help to our team when we are super busy! Bill is always willing to help out in whatever way possible, whether it's engraving tags, showing a dog, or working in Pet Point. We always appreciate when he comes in for a shift, as we know our hectic days will be much easier!” – Liz Pashley, Adoption Specialist
