Debby Kane - Honored September 2019

Debby tell us.....

What programs and projects do you volunteer with at Best Friends LA?

I started by cleaning dog cages, walking dogs and showcasing.  I found that I really enjoyed helping people select the perfect animal, so I trained to work in the adoption office.  Right now, I try to juggle walking dogs and adoptions but notice that I spend more time in the adoption office introducing dogs and cats to potential adopters.  I really enjoy special events such as Warner Center, Cat Con etc. where I can help facilitate multiple adoptions.

Why do you choose to volunteer with Best Friends LA?

After I retired, I knew that I wanted to work around animals and people that loved animals.  I had been a faithful television watcher of Dogtown when it was on the air and I always wanted to do something for Best Friends.

How long have you been a Best Friends LA volunteer?

I have been a volunteer for over two years.

Do you have a favorite story to share about an experience volunteering with Best Friends LA?

The other day a young couple came into the Center and fell in love with a dog.  The couple and the dog were absolutely joyful.  I could not stop smiling the rest of the day.  Then, just a week ago an older dog was showcased on KTLA and a woman drove from Laguna Beach to adopt.  She didn't care that the dog had dental problems, skin problems etc.  She was so excited that everyone in the front lobby could feel her joy.  And most importantly, an older dog found a wonderful home.  That's my favorite part of volunteering.

Do you have any pets?

I have two dogs at home, both rescues of course.  A 10-year-old Stafford Terrier, Wiley, and an 8-year-old German Shepherd, Sasha.  Like so many German Shepherds, Sasha is the noise maker.  She uses her voice to tell us everything she thinks.  She lets all of us know it is dinnertime, walk time and play time.  Interestingly she runs in the park but is very lazy about chasing a ball.  It is beneath her sensibilities.  Wiley on the other hand loves playing ball and cuddling up.  His soulful eyes look straight into your heart.
