Location: Bentonville, AR

Hiring Range: This position’s hiring range is anticipated to be $20 per hour to $22 per hour, depending on experience, plus benefits.

Interviews will occur weekly until the position is filled (a recruiter phone screen will occur prior to a manager interview)

Position Summary: Maintenance Technicians are responsible for efficiently maintaining the facility and grounds to allow for the daily operations/functions of the Pet Resource Center.  This position requires a highly skilled and motivated person who has a knowledge of building, grounds, and maintenance techniques.  They will play a crucial role in providing a comfortable setting for staff, visitors, and animals. The position will require effective communication skills, the ability to perform a variety of skilled and unskilled physical labor activities, operating maintenance and landscape equipment, working with utilities, building systems and vendors.  Technicians may receive additional assignments based on organizational needs. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a safe workplace valuing and modeling safe work practices and communicating about unsafe practices.

  • Facility Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections of the facility, addressing any repairs, maintenance needs, or safety concerns promptly. Ensure cleanliness, functionality, and organization of all areas, including animal habitats, common areas, restrooms, and offices. Operate, service, clean, and care for tools and equipment. Perform preventive maintenance on various equipment.  Troubleshoot building systems and work with external contractors. Assist with temperature control, HVAC, and lighting in all areas.

  • Grounds Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections of the grounds, addressing any repairs, maintenance needs or safety concerns promptly. Ensure grounds are presentable and safe.

  • Animal Care Support: Collaborate with the animal care team to ensure the facility's infrastructure supports the health, safety, and well-being of the resident animals.

  • Supplies and Inventory Management: Manage inventory of cleaning supplies and other facility-related materials. Monitor stock levels, place orders, and maintain relationships with suppliers to ensure timely and cost-effective procurement.

  • Vendor Management: Oversee and coordinate the activities of external service providers, such as maintenance contractors, pest control, and waste management companies. Ensure service contracts are in place and review vendor performance to maintain high standards.

  • Budgeting and Financial Management: Identify cost-saving opportunities. Provide input on capital improvement projects and equipment purchases.

  • Compliance and Regulatory Standards: Stay updated on relevant regulations, permits, and industry best practices related to facility management, animal welfare, and safety. Ensure the facility complies with local, state, and federal regulations and licensing requirements.

  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate with the pet resource center's staff, including animal care professionals, administrative personnel, and volunteers. Provide support and guidance to team members regarding facility-related matters and participate in staff meetings as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience:

  • Previous experience in facilities maintenance and/or general contracting is strongly preferred. Basic knowledge of light carpentry, plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems.

  • Familiarity with landscaping or gardening is preferred.

  • Familiarity with standard cleaning procedures and equipment.

  • Ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a safe working environment.

  • Sensitivity to environmental issues.

  • An ability to learn on the job and a desire to learn new skills.

  • A positive approach to challenging situations. Resourceful, get-it-done attitude; initiative to assist in any area or process; problem solving, seeking answers independently and enthusiastically; flexibility to persist until goals are achieved.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with well-developed organization and time management skills to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.

  • Strong interpersonal skills - verbal and written communication, a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along with people from diverse backgrounds, as well as the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations.  

  • Ability to follow written or oral direction effectively.

  • Comfortability and ability to work with, leash, kennel, walk, and handle cats and dogs, including those with health and/or behavior conditions/concerns; basic ability to identify and speak to medical and behavioral characteristics of dogs and cats.

  • General basic computer skills required, Microsoft Office products, email, calendar & internet applications, or desire to learn.

  • Must be personally committed to the Mission and Core Values of the Best Friends Animal Society.

  • Ability to professionally advocate Best Friends' positions on issues.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to routinely lift and carry up to 70 pounds.

  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold for prolonged periods 

  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activity daily, including, but not limited to climbing, lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending.

  • Exposure to dogs and cats of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status as well as their allergens.

  • Must have a valid driver's license for at least 3 years, ability to qualify to be added to Best Friends insurance.

  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule; position may include weekends, evenings, on-call shifts, and holiday work.

  • Ability to travel overnight when needed, not often. Travel up to 10%.

  • Ability to operate a variety of hand and portable power tools.
