Sunny pup doesn’t let injury slow him down
A ray of sunshine. That’s how to describe Greggy. This bouncy pup with soft, velvety ears is full of light — his playful personality shining through in every interaction, whether romping with his canine friends or snuggling with his foster caregiver, Makayla Current. But Greggy’s life wasn’t always so bright.
Greggy came to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in need of urgent veterinary care. He had an injury to one of his hind legs that had become seriously infected. Best Friends veterinarians quickly went to work, but unfortunately, due to the severity of the infection, they had to amputate his leg. He needed a place to heal, and Makayla was more than happy to open her home to this sweet boy.

Best Friends’ goal is for all shelters nationwide to reach no-kill in 2025, and people who step up to foster pets, either with Best Friends or any animal shelter or rescue organization, play a vital part in reaching that goal.
Three-legged triumph
From the moment Makayla brought Greggy home, life on three legs didn’t slow this playful pooch down at all. He ran, played, and acted as though he'd always lived life on three legs. “He runs and plays and has no limitations at all,” says Makayla.
Greggy quickly befriended Makayla’s other dogs, though at first, he didn’t quite understand their body language. “He had no dog skills when I brought him home,” she notes. But with time, he learned how to pick up on social cues and communicate with them.

Aside from improving his dog-to-dog communication, Greggy also learned to channel his energy into appropriate outlets. His love for chewing, once focused on shoes (RIP, shoes), shifted toward toys. Now, he happily entertains himself by flinging toys in the air and catching them with joyful abandon. “Everything he does is so adorable,” laughs Makayla.
The future is bright
In no time, Greggy blossomed into a well-rounded, confident companion. “He’s such a solid dog now,” says Makayla.
As sweet as he is gentle, Greggy is also a huge cuddle bug who loves to shower people with kisses. “All he needs is a home with someone who will love and play with him, and he’ll be the happiest boy in the world,” Makayla adds.
Let's make every shelter and every community no-kill in 2025
Our goal at Best Friends is to support all animal shelters in the U.S. in reaching no-kill in 2025. No-kill means saving every dog and cat in a shelter who can be saved, accounting for community safety and good quality of life for pets.
Shelter staff can’t do it alone. Saving animals in shelters is everyone’s responsibility, and it takes support and participation from the community. No-kill is possible when we work together thoughtfully, honestly, and collaboratively.
