Best Friends Animal Society Offers Dos and Don’ts for New Pet Owners

It’s time to mark calendars for the most adorable day of the year!

With National Puppy Day coming up on March 23, Best Friends Animal Society, a leading national animal welfare organization working to end the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters, is encouraging those who want to add a new canine to their family to choose the adoption option.

“Bringing home a new puppy can be exciting but also overwhelming,” said Julie Castle, CEO, Best Friends Animal Society. “By taking the time to train and socialize your puppy, you are setting them up to become a well-behaved adult dog and lifelong best friend.”

As people and pups everywhere get ready to bring on the cuteness, Best Friends is offering the following tips to new puppy adopters that will set both them and their puppies up for success in and out of the home:

  • DO Consider how caring for a puppy will fit into your lifestyle. Make sure everyone in the household is enthusiastic and understands the commitment involved before adopting a puppy - or any pet for that matter.

  • DON’T Believe your perfect match can’t be found at a shelter or rescue group. Dogs of all sizes and breeds are waiting for loving homes.

  • DO Socialize your puppy with new experiences so they won’t be afraid of different situations, objects, sounds, people, and other animals.

  • DON’T Be inconsistent. Puppies require a lot of attention, playtime, and exercise. People looking for a friend to relax with at the end of their day might want to think about adopting a more mature dog.

  • DO Be patient. It takes time to teach puppies basic commands and appropriate behaviors. Give praise and treats as rewards.

Throughout the month of March, $DOGS Token is covering adoption fees at Best Friends locations across the country, including New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Salt Lake City, and Northwest Arkansas, as well as the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, UT.

Visit bestfriends.org for additional pet care resources or to find a local shelter or rescue group to adopt a new pet.
