Ask your senator on the Insurance Committee to support and advance S.4254.

Currently, responsible pet owners can be charged higher premiums, be denied insurance coverage, or be dropped from their insurance company just because of their dog's breed, mix, or appearance.

Scientific data does not support the insurance industry's claim that aggressive behavior is present in specific breeds. A variety of common dogs fall within their list of "risk" breeds such as boxers, Great Danes, American Staffordshire bull terriers, Dalmatians, and many more.

The likelihood a dog will bite, however, is based on non-breed factors such as the dog's socialization, obedience training, the owner's supervision, and third party interactions with the dog.

If enacted, S.4254 will prohibit insurers from refusing to issue or renew, cancel, or charge increased premiums for certain policies based solely on the breed of dog owned.
