A Thanksgiving Opportunity
We aspire to a lofty vision---No More Homeless Pets. It is rooted in the soil that gave birth to America, and has remarkable similarities to the basic principles upon which our country was built.
We take in those unfortunate animals that have fallen on hard times and deserve better.
We find homes for the luckless ones who have been abandoned by those that once gave them succor, and provide them the safety of home.
We open our arms in welcome to those bedraggled and lost creatures who have no way to care for themselves.
We hold high a beacon of light, signaling the way towards better times.
Our hearts embrace the animals with a generosity that promises nothing other than an opportunity to fulfill their true worth.
This is not a new idea. The inscription on the Statue of Liberty appeals to the world to send to this country “your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me.”
What an inspiring ideal! We offer life to those who can barely cling to it. And of course it expresses the principle at the heart of America’s offer to all its citizens so powerfully, native born or immigrant---that the country extends the opportunity to realize their most positive qualities and abilities.
Walk down the aisles of most animal shelters and you will see huddled masses yearning to breathe free. You can see it in their desperate appeals to us, some with agitated barks, some with sad eyes as they crouch in fear at the back of their cages.
When we take them in, we provide them not just with rescue, but with an opportunity. America offers safety and the chance to make anything of one’s self. We save lives and as we place them in homes with loving caregivers we give once homeless pets the opportunity to express their loyalty, devotion and love. These are natural qualities they have in abundance. No need to teach them to be loyal. No need to lecture them on love. It resides naturally with them.
What better way to celebrate the uniquely American holiday of Thanksgiving than to the share the blessing of freedom and opportunity with a homeless pet.
