Saving the lives of the dogs and cats in our communities and supporting programs that keep them safe, healthy and with the people who love and care for them are things we can all get behind. So, why have we always relied on a single institution to take on that responsibility? Animal shelters play an essential role in our communities, but amid a global pandemic, that role is changing for the better.

Throughout the country, pet fostering is at an all-time high and a long-term vision of a community-driven sheltering approach for pets in need is coming to fruition. Last week, I had a chance to talk with Best Friends team members around the country about why now is the time to change the way the animal sheltering world operates for good.
