Location: Kanab, Utah

Hiring Range: This position’s hiring rate is anticipated to be $18.00 to $24.00 per hour, depending on experience, plus great benefits!

Interviews will occur weekly until the position is filled.

Position Summary: Lifesaving Outcome Specialists are responsible for the daily functions and growth of the Adoption programs at the Sanctuary. Specialists act with urgency to accomplish important tasks and play a direct role in achieving Best Friends Animal Society’s no-kill mission and organizational success. They develop and steward partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to maximize lifesaving opportunities and help support positive pathways for both dogs and cats at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support transport program operations. including but not limited to receiving transports and helping with intake bios and physically moving new residents into their new areas.

  • Recruit, support, empower and enable volunteer foster parents through regular communication, training, and guidance with the goal of utilizing volunteers to expand Best Friends lifesaving capacity. Make sure animals in foster are being promoted and are visible to adopters.

  • Work directly with and support volunteers on all aspects and protocols of outcome programs, including program protocols, cleaning protocols, specific animal behavior, and care, animal handling, transportation requirements and procedures, data entry, and communications with the goal of maximizing meaningful volunteer contributions.

  • Develop a general knowledge of the animals in the Sanctuary’s care and collaborate with caregivers, management, marketing, social media, medical staff, volunteers, and visitors to best match both the animal and client’s (fosters and transfer partners) needs.

  • Seek and promote training and continuing education to enhance Best Friends lifesaving efforts.

  • Create and maintain a positive work environment and interdepartmental work relationships. Communicate regularly and effectively with team leads and coworkers.

  • Maintain a safe workplace, valuing, and modeling safe work practices, adhering to organizational safety practices and rules, and communicating about unsafe practices and conditions.

  • Keep up to date on trainings coordinated by Dogtown and Cat world leadership and trainers as needed, requested.

  • Support coverage in public access animal areas as requested; such as Adoption Hub, Admissions building, Sinjins, Roxy’s, Welcome Center Cat rooms. 

  • Support offsite adoption events by collecting materials needed, bringing animals and processing adoptions.

  • Promote, coordinate, and facilitate animal placements, this includes animals in foster, by matching potential adopters with animals looking for homes by providing superior customer service, counseling on pet history and needs and provide medical and behavior support and information to set up adopter for success; coordinate pet adoption opportunities through events, offsite adoption meets and identify pet retention opportunities to help expand Best Friends lifesaving capacity utilizing volunteers when able. 

  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience:

  • Bilingual or multi-lingual skills preferred but not required.

  • Familiarity with animal foster programs helpful but not required.

  • Customer-centric, non-judgmental approach to engaging with partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues.

  • Ability to work with, leash, kennel, walk, and handle cats and dogs, including those with health and/or behavior conditions/concerns; basic ability to identify and speak to medical and behavioral characteristics of dogs and cats.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along with people from different backgrounds, as well as the ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with well-developed organization skills to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.

  • Resourceful, get-it-done attitude; initiative to assist in any area or process; problem-solving, seeking answers independently and enthusiastically; flexibility to persist until goals are achieved.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products; familiarity with shelter software/animal management software, familiarity with ezy-vet and Docusign procedures or desire to learn.

Physical Requirements:

  • Routinely lift 40 pounds and perform daily strenuous activity including, but not limited to lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending.

  • Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods of time including typing, sitting, walking, arm, and hand motion.

  • Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.

  • Exposure to dogs, cats, and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status.

  • Valid driver’s license, meeting Best Friends Animal Society’s driver qualification standards; ability to travel, including overnight stays, when needed.

  • Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule; position includes weekends, nights, and holiday work.
