"Our Best Friends" is a monthly installment to honor just a few of our outstanding Best Friends LA volunteers.  This is your chance to get to know some of the shining stars in the Best Friends LA volunteer program!  Volunteers are either nominated by Best Friends LA staff or other volunteers in our program.  If you would like to volunteer, email the Best Friends LA Volunteer Department at volunteerla@bestfriends.org

Emily Lucitt - Honored March 2019

Emily, tell us....

What BFLA programs/events/volunteer roles do you find yourself participating in?

I’m a Grey Paw Cat Volunteer and Adoptions Cat Showcaser at NKLA, and an Orange Paw Cat Volunteer at Best Friends Mission Hills.  I also love to volunteer for special events, photo shoots, and the Super Adoptions!

Why do you choose to volunteer with Best Friends LA?

I volunteered initially after having a great time at a Cat Yoga event.  I need some cat time in my life, so it was a natural fit.

How long have you been a BFLA/NKLA volunteer?

I started at NKLA in January 2018, and Mission Hills a few months later.

What do you do when you're not volunteering (career/extracurricular activities)?

I’m currently putting the finishing touches on my PhD dissertation (UCLA Anthropology) and figuring out my next steps!

Do you have a favorite story to share about an experience volunteering with Best Friends LA? Share it!

I love seeing the immediate connections between adopters and cats.  One night, a couple asked me how they would know that a cat is ‘the one’ for them, after having been to multiple different rescues/shelters.  I didn’t know how to respond other than saying, “you feel something’s right.”  They had initially signed up to meet 2 cats, but a shier girl, Sophia, watched them intently.  After they saw her, it was love at first sight!

Do you have any pets? Tell us about them!

Though I’m definitely a “cat lady,” I actually have a dog, Mickey!  He likes to be by my side at all times and thinks he’s a cat.

What others are saying about Emily:

Emily is the best!  She is not only one of our most talented Cat Team volunteers - she also hosts first day trainings supporting new volunteers as they begin with us!  She is an incredible teacher and guide for new volunteers as they begin with us at the center.  Emily has helped our program grow and we are over the moon happy to have her as part of volunteer team.  Thank you, Emily, for all that you do for our cats, adopters and volunteers.  Your contributions to the center are invaluable! -NKLA Staff
