Bring love home for homeless pets in central Mississippi

Homeless pets are being killed in shelters across the state but in especially high numbers in shelters in central Mississippi. Working together, we can change that.

In 2023, 7,097 dogs and cats in Mississippi shelters were killed because they didn’t have safe places to stay, with the majority of deaths happening in one shelter.

To save the lives of these dogs and cats in central Mississippi, Best Friends is collaborating with local officials to make changes in their communities that save lives by allowing shelters to implement lifesaving programs like fostering, moving pets to places where they are more likely to be adopted, and supporting less restrictive adoption policies.

We're also working with the shelters that are struggling to save pets' lives by creating programs to get pets adopted, connecting shelters with one another to share resources and knowledge, extending hours of operation to be open to the public, providing training and mentoring to shelter staff, engaging with the community, hosting adoption events, providing veterinary services for shelters and rescue groups, and creating programs to save community cats (aka cats who live outdoors).

We know that ending the killing in shelters is possible in central Mississippi, but we can’t do it without you. When we work together to bring our best friends home, we help loving pets find the families they’ve been dreaming of, and we get the country closer to ending the killing of pets in shelters.

Ending the killing of pets in shelters

The goal of ending killing in shelters is called no-kill, and together we can save the lives of pets in shelters who are often killed due to a lack of space.

No-kill is a community philosophy and commitment to saving every dog and cat in a shelter who can be saved.

Typically, the number of dogs and cats who are suffering from irreparable medical or behavioral issues that compromise their quality of life and prevent them from being rehomed is not more than 10% of all dogs and cats entering shelters. Therefore, we designate shelters that meet the 90% save-rate benchmark as no-kill.

To achieve no-kill in central Mississippi, 7,097 more animals would need to be saved in shelters throughout the state.

Achieving no-kill is a collaboration between shelters and their community, so the first step is for individuals to understand the progress being made in their own community and learn how they can help.

About Best Friends

Best Friends Animal Society is working to save the lives of cats and dogs all across the country, giving pets second chances and happy homes.

As recently as 2016, 2 million cats and dogs were killed in shelters in this country simply because shelters didn't have the community support or the resources to save their lives. In 2023, that number was down to 415,000. But there’s still work to do to ensure a bright future for every dog and cat in America.

Best Friends operates the nation's largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals and is committed to saving the lives of homeless pets by working with shelters and passionate people like you. We’re sharing our resources and what we know to help shelters around the country achieve no-kill in their communities.

Together, we will bring the whole country to no-kill in 2025.
