City of angels

An estimated 300 pets, including all shelter cats, were placed as a result of the annual Best Friends Animal Society Spring Super Adoption Festival held April 27 in North Hollywood.

Billed as California’s largest adoption event, the festival was covered by the Los Angeles Times and the city’s ABC and FOX television affiliates.

More than 60 rescue groups and shelters participated, including Pet Orphans, Pooch Heaven, Paw'd Squad, Molly's Mutts & Meows and the Living Free Sanctuary.

Among the celebrities who attended were Eric Idle, Madeline Stowe, Jason Grey-Stanford, Margot Boecker, Shelley Morrison, Frances Conroy, Elaine Hendrix, Jean Mathison, Eric Bruskotter and Tamar Gellar.

The free event, organized by the Los Angeles Programs of Best Friends Animal Society, is intended to find new homes for animals in an upbeat, festival-like atmosphere that offers fun for the whole family.

It included a children’s activity pavilion, all-day dog agility, Frisbee and flyball demonstrations, the popular "Shelter Dog Parade," pet psychics, veterinarians, dog trainers, pet-related products, service vendors, a food court and much more

"This is a very powerful event that not only impacts the pet overpopulation crisis in Los Angeles by creating public awareness of the cause of homeless pets, but also saves innocent lives, one pet at a time," said Francis Battista, Best Friends’ director of Los Angeles programs.

Best Friends also presented a $5,000 check to Los Angeles Animal Services. The funds were raised from sales of the 2007 rescue calendar.

The event was sponsored by the Petco Foundation, Designing Health, Chrissie’s Fund and The Pet Assistant with KoogaPet.

Co-sponsors were Dog’s Life magazine and LA City Beat newspaper.
