Losing a beloved dog can be devastating at any time. But when Christine Lamoureux’s golden retriever died not long after her husband, the blow was even worse for the author and her two young sons. What emerged from her compounded grief is Love Letter to My Dog, a memoir that tracks the emotional upheaval in her family’s life.

Christine’s memoir, however, is not a linear or chronological one. Told in brief, interrelated vignettes, the story unfolds piecemeal.

Upon initial reading, this can be a little confusing because the vignettes go back and forth in time. But what Christine has achieved by using this format is an examination of grief in all its stages and fluctuations in starkly beautiful moments in time.

The intertwining of love, loss, and grief is honest and compelling. Love Letter to My Dog is just what the title implies.

Let's make every shelter and every community no-kill

Our goal at Best Friends is to support all animal shelters in the U.S. in reaching no-kill. No-kill means saving every dog and cat in a shelter who can be saved, accounting for community safety and good quality of life for pets.

Shelter staff can’t do it alone. Saving animals in shelters is everyone’s responsibility, and it takes support and participation from the community. No-kill is possible when we work together thoughtfully, honestly, and collaboratively.
