Yesterday, 39 dogs and 11 cats boarded a lifesaving flight out of Austin, TX, to Delaware where they will continue their search for loving homes. The emergency airlift helped make space for incoming pets displaced by the flooding and is a joint effort between national nonprofit Best Friends Animal SocietyBrandywine Valley SPCAAustin Pets Alive!, and Wings of Rescue

The pets aboard yesterday’s airlift were already in shelters and will now continue their search at Brandywine Valley SPCA campuses; including the Animal Adoption Center in Lindenwold, New Jersey; PAWS in Rockport, Maine; Safe Harbor Sanctuary in Brooks, Maine; and Happily Ever After Rescue, Copiague, New York.

Efforts like yesterday’s flight help reduce overcrowded conditions in shelters directly impacted by the floods. By helping empty their kennels, more space is created for locally affected pets who need a safe place to land.

Now, the involved organizations are asking the local community to step-up and help pets affected by the floods by fostering or adopting a pet from organizations welcoming in dogs and cats impacted by the floods.

For those who are unable to foster or adopt, donations to Best Friends Emergency Response Fund help provide immediate relief to pets and the people working tirelessly to save them. Disasters, like the Texas floods, create an urgent need for food, medical care, transportation, and shelter. Best Friends is collaborating with Wings of Rescue to send emergency supplies to animal shelters in need while continuing to work alongside Border Animal Mission, Footbridge Foundation, Hill Country Humane Society, and Austin Pets Alive! to support lifesaving efforts on the ground.
