Michael Mountain, a co-founder of Best Friends, served as its president and as the founding editor of Best Friends magazine until 2007.

In the early days, he and co-founder Steven Hirano developed a unique approach to fundraising appeals that turned around the early organization’s struggling finances and set the tone for the Best Friends voice and style that would become a key part of Best Friends' identity.

As president, he oversaw the transition of Best Friends from a sanctuary on a shoestring budget to a national organization and movement with members and partnering humane groups all across the country.

Michael is the co-founder of The Whale Sanctuary Project, whose mission is to bring an end to the practice of keeping whales and dolphins captive for the purpose of entertainment.
