Ask the HUD Secretary to put a limit on pet rents and extra security deposits.

Families shouldn't have to choose between housing and their pets. With your help, we can put an end to exorbitant pet fees in public housing!

Affordable housing is hard to find; it's even more difficult if you have a pet. Additional security deposits and monthly pet fees can add thousands to the cost of renting each year, forcing some families to make the difficult decision of surrendering their pet(s) to shelters.

In a 2021 inclusive housing survey, more than 70% of renters said that pet-friendly housing is difficult to find and 59% reported pet-friendly housing as too expensive.

Reasonable limits are needed to help pets stay in their homes. Reducing 'pet rents' can also remove barriers to adoption, leading to more dogs and cats finding homes.

TAKE ACTION: Send a message to Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia Fudge urging HUD to issue guidelines for limiting exorbitant pet fees in public housing.
