Location: Remote within the contiguous United States.  The job duties and responsibilities of this role are unable to be performed in the following states, California and Washington at this time.

Compensation Range: This position’s hiring range is anticipated to be $60,000- $67,000 annually, depending on experience, plus great benefits!

Position Summary

The Compensation Specialist provides dedicated day-to-day support for Best Friends Animal Society’s compensation administration, Workday compensation transactions, job architecture maintenance, job profiles, job descriptions, pay range information, compensation data, reporting, and related resources. This role helps ensure compensation information and processes are organized, accurate, consistent, market-informed, and aligned with Best Friends’ compensation philosophy.

This role is expected to spend approximately 70% of time supporting compensation administration, compensation data, Workday compensation tasks, job description and job profile maintenance, market research, reporting, compliance tracking, and compensation-related resources. The remaining approximately 30% of time will support defined People Strategy & Analytics priorities, with a focus on first-year journey execution support, onboarding coordination, documentation, resource maintenance, and assigned project follow-through. Responsibilities may shift based on compensation cycles, job architecture work, Workday needs, and approved portfolio priorities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as an ambassador and example of Best Friends Animal Society’s Guiding Principles by upholding a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, trust, inclusivity, and respect
  • Support the administration and maintenance of compensation resources, including pay ranges, compensation guidelines, job descriptions, job profiles, and related tools or materials
  • Gather, organize, and summarize internal compensation data and external market information to support pay range reviews, benchmarking, job evaluations, and compensation planning
  • Complete assigned compensation-related tasks in Workday, including routine updates to compensation data, role information, job profiles, and related records, following approved processes and escalating questions as needed
  • Identify potential compensation data issues, inconsistencies, or items needing review and escalate them to the appropriate owner
  • Generate routine compensation reports, summaries, trackers, and data files to support review by the Director, People Strategy & Analytics and other People & Culture stakeholders
  • Support tracking of routine compensation-related compliance items, including minimum wage changes, pay transparency requirements, and other compensation-related updates
  • Provide routine process and resource support to managers and People & Culture partners related to job descriptions, role changes, new positions, promotions, and compensation process questions
  • Escalate complex, sensitive, or non-routine compensation questions to the Director, People Strategy & Analytics or another appropriate People & Culture leader
  • Help prepare, update, and organize compensation-related resources, including process guides, templates, FAQs, job change resources, manager materials, and other approved communications
  • Support defined People Strategy & Analytics execution needs, including first-year journey and onboarding coordination support, materials/checklist updates, cohort-related follow-through, and other assigned portfolio priorities
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality and discretion when handling sensitive employee, compensation, organizational, and system information
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills and Experience

  • 1–3 years of experience, coursework, internship experience, or demonstrated interest in compensation, human resources, finance, data analytics, or a related field
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records, files, and data
  • Basic analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to review data, identify inconsistencies, and summarize findings
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain information clearly and professionally
  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information with discretion
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks, deadlines, and priorities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, especially Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams
  • Familiarity with Workday or another HRIS/HCM system preferred
  • Familiarity with compensation concepts such as pay ranges, job descriptions, job profiles, market pricing, or internal equity preferred
  • Collaborative, adaptable, and committed to supporting fair, consistent, and values-aligned People & Culture practices

  • Ability to see and sort a variety of printed and online information
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm, and hand motion
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to work remotely with travel up to 5%
