This May, pets take center stage

May is National Pet Month, and that means we’re spotlighting pets — and the joy they bring — all month long. Get in on the fun!

To celebrate, we're going BIG … and so can you. Throughout May, visit one of our pet adoption centers, pop-ups, or the Sanctuary and bring home a new best friend for free. You can also learn the latest in lifesaving at our national conference and make a difference for animals in shelters just by running errands.

It all adds up to a brighter future for homeless pets. In 2024 alone, 425,000 cats and dogs were killed in shelters around this country simply because they didn't have a safe place to call home. But pets belong in homes, not in shelters, and when you show up for homeless pets this May, you're creating lasting change.

Give Love. Save Lives. with Walmart

This May, pets get the spotlight in Walmart stores across the U.S., including in communities like yours.

Best Friends has been named Walmart’s collaborator for their celebration of National Pet Month for the second year in a row, happening the entire month of May. This means when you visit a Walmart store or shop online, you’ll be helping to save lives when you make a purchase for your pet from participating brands.

You can ensure a happy home for even more pets when you visit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary or a Best Friends Pet Adoption Center, where adoption fees are covered throughout the entire month of May, thanks to Blue Buffalo and Walmart.

Best Friends and local shelters will also be on-site for events throughout May at select Walmart stores with plenty of adorable, adoptable animals. Thanks to our network partners, all pet adoption fees will be waived. Can’t make it to an event? Then consider dropping by any of Best Friends’ pet adoption centers, and enjoy free pet adoptions throughout National Pet Month, courtesy of Blue Buffalo and Walmart.

Come to Best Friends National Conference and leave with tools and connections to save more lives

This year, the conference is featuring the AI Learning Lounge, where — whether curious, cautious, or confident about AI — attendees can explore how using AI responsibly is saving lives.

Come ready to learn, and leave ready to act. Best Friends National Conference brings together leaders from across animal welfare — advocacy, shelter medicine, fundraising, field services, and more — to share the strategies, tools, and programs that are helping to make communities no-kill.

This year's focus on using AI in animal welfare, collaboration, and collective responsibility means you'll walk away with real tools to achieve, maintain, or return to no-kill in your community.

Bring National Pet Month to the animals in your community

Don’t live near an event? No problem! You can put the spotlight on pets in your community this May when you adopt, volunteer, foster, and support your local shelter. Just fill in your email address, and we'll send you a list of shelters where you live and share more about how you can help save the lives of homeless pets.

Save pets in your community

A dog or cat is killed in America’s shelters every 90 seconds just because they don’t have a safe place to call home. You can help change that.
Whether you adopt, give, volunteer, or use your voice to protect animals, you’re helping to end the killing in America's animal shelters.

Saving lives all month long — and beyond

People like you are making no-kill a reality for shelters across the country all year long.

About Best Friends Animal Society

Best Friends is working to end the killing of dogs and cats in U.S. shelters in part by getting more pets out of shelters and into loving homes.

We’ve come a long way since the first known city reached no-kill in 1994, and now we’re closer than ever to making the entire country no-kill. Of the roughly 3,900 shelters operating in America today, 1,300 of them are not yet no-kill, but nearly half are close with 100 or fewer additional pets to be saved, and we know what to do to get them there.

Best Friends is committed to working with passionate people like you to save homeless pets through adoption, volunteering, fostering, and advocacy. In addition to our lifesaving centers around the U.S, we also founded and run the nation's largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals.

Working together, we can save homeless pets in our communities and secure a better future for our best friends. Together, we will bring the whole country to no-kill.
