"Our Best Friends" is a weekly installment to honor just a few of our outstanding Best Friends LA volunteers. This is your chance to get to know some of the shining stars in the Best Friends LA volunteer program! Volunteers are either nominated by Best Friends LA staff or other volunteers in our program. If you would like to volunteer, e-mail the Best Friends LA Volunteer Department at volunteerLA@bestfriends.org.

Ruth, tell us.....

What programs and projects do you volunteer with at Best Friends LA?
Mainly at the Front Desk: greeting people/answering the phone/generally helping visitors and staff as needed. I also help at Outreach Events.

Why do you choose to volunteer with Best Friends LA?
Animal welfare and animal rights are very important to me.

How long have you been a Best Friends LA volunteer?
Since the beginning of the year.

What type of fun stuff do you do when you're not volunteering?
I was teaching at an inner city school till a short while ago. When I decided to leave that field, I knew I wanted to work with animal welfare or animal rights. Haven't found the right job yet but I love volunteering at NKLA!  I also have been working part-time as a research assistant.

Do you have a favorite story to share about an experience volunteering with Best Friends LA?
Every time an cat or a dog leaves to go to a loving home, and I've interacted with the adopters and/or animal!

Do you have any pets?
I have two dogs:  James Alexander (Jax), probably a German Shepherd mix, I found living on the street in South Los Angeles about six years ago when he was about 9 months old.  He was covered from head to toe with mange, had lost most of his fur, and was very malnourished!  (He now has a particularly luxurious, beautiful coat!) Two years later I found Charlie, a terrier mix, about four weeks old and weighing only 3lb, sitting alone in a parking lot near to where I found Jax.

What others are saying about Ruth:
"Ruth is amazing! Weekends are always extremely busy at the center and it's so wonderful to always be able to count on her to be there to assist the adoptions team." - Erika, Volunteer Coordinator
