Papaya is a petite, scruffy sweetheart with a soft heart and a quietly blossoming personality. She didn’t have much human interaction in her early life, so the world of being a β€œhouse dog” is still a little new to herβ€”but she’s making beautiful progress every day. Papaya is a gentle observer at first. She may take a little time to feel safe around new people, but once she trusts you, her true self shines through: silly, affectionate, and deeply devoted. She loves to stay close to her favorite humans and has even proven to be a wonderful office companion, happily relaxing while her foster works. She currently lives with two large dogs and has done well with dogs of all sizes. While she can be a bit hesitant in initial meetings, Papaya warms up with time and then enjoys playful interactions. She often looks to her dog friends for reassurance and guidance, so a confident canine companion in her forever home would be a big plus. She’s also been around cats and has politely chosen to mind her own business. Papaya is developing excellent house mannersβ€”she appears to be housetrained, sleeps soundly through the night, and has a great appetite. She’s comfortable in a crate, especially when she has a dog buddy nearby, which helps her feel secure. Papaya is looking for a patient, understanding home where she can continue to build confidence at her own pace. In return, she will reward her people with loyalty, quiet companionship, and the sweetest little bursts of playful joy once she knows she’s safe. If you’re ready to help a shy girl bloom into her best self, Papaya might just be your perfect match.

About Best Friends Animal Society

Best Friends is working to end the killing of dogs and cats in U.S. shelters in part by getting more pets out of shelters and into loving homes.

We’ve come a long way since the first known city reached no-kill in 1994, and now we’re closer than ever to making the entire country no-kill. Of the roughly 3,900 shelters operating in America today, 1,300 of them are not yet no-kill, but nearly half are close with 100 or fewer additional pets to be saved, and we know what to do to get them there.

Best Friends is committed to working with passionate people like you to save homeless pets through adoption, volunteering, fostering, and advocacy. In addition to our lifesaving centers around the U.S, we also founded and run the nation's largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals.

Working together, we can save homeless pets in our communities and secure a better future for our best friends. Together, we will bring the whole country to no-kill.
