Salt Lake County Animal Services lifesaving events

The Sunshine of My Life adoption event at Salt Lake County Animal Services paired Best Friends Animal Society-Utah with one of the area's largest shelters to help get wonderful companion animals into loving homes March 22-23, 2013. With dozens of the shelter's delightful animals going home, it was a winner!

Senior Siamese adopted at event

One of the most heartfelt adoptions from the event was a cat named Annabelle. Annabelle was a staff favorite. A gorgeous Siamese mix, this sweet 16-year-old girl is surprising and delighting her new mom, Barbra Eyler, a first-time cat parent.

"I can't describe how happy Annabelle makes me," shares Barbra. "I always adopt senior animals, and when I was at the shelter on Friday, I heard the staff talking about her. I thought, 'If she doesn't find a home by the end of the event, I will take her.' Then I got home and realized I really did want to adopt her myself."

Barbra says that while Annabelle is considered a senior due to her age, her new charge is very outgoing. "She loves to play, and she's constantly discovering new things throughout the house," says Barbra. "She is also a fabulous officemate. I work from home, and she's always coming in to check out what I'm up to. She is just so perfect and friendly. I'm so glad I was able to adopt her."

Salt Lake County Animal Services Kitten Nursery party

Salt Lake County Animal Services' new Kitten Nursery launch party was held the same weekend as the adoption event. The nursery will be a real lifesaver for the shelter's smallest and most at-risk charges. Kittens in the traditional shelter setting are susceptible to disease. The new Kitten Nursery will give them their own area, where volunteers will have access around the clock to help bottle-feed. Salt Lake County Animal Services has opened this new endeavor to ramp up the lifesaving.

The Kitten Nursery party was a real hit. Folks got to see the new facility and learn about the great new volunteering opportunities. The Bottle Baby volunteers are also part of the Cat Crusaders, aka Cat Cru, a program that is a result of a partnership between Best Friends-Utah and SLCoAS to help increase the number of cat and kitten adoptions at SLCoAS and educate the public on issues our feline friends face in our community. If you love cats, you'll love to be part of the Cat Cru.
