Help remove pet adoption barriers in Danville
Danville residents: Ask the Danville City Council and Mayor to support reforms that make it easier for pets to find safe homes.
Shelter pets deserve every possible chance to leave the shelter alive. Sadly, this wasn't the case for Danville Area Humane Society (DAHS) shelter dog, Eve. Despite having a documented pathway to safety, Eve was unnecessarily euthanized within just ~2.5 weeks of intake.
Eve's death was not the result of a single mistake, but of multiple preventable failures at every stage of the shelter process.
We are calling for meaningful reforms that prioritize lifesaving and help more pets leave the shelter alive in Danville. One of those reforms is removing unnecessary barriers to adoption.
Too often, adoption policies can unintentionally prevent good adopters from bringing pets home — including families who rent, live in apartments, don’t have fenced yards, work full-time, or otherwise don’t fit outdated ideas of what a pet home should look like.
If Danville is serious about preventing tragedies like Eve’s from happening again, DAHS must focus on removing adoption barriers.
TAKE ACTION: Ask the Danville City Council and Mayor to work with outside experts, including Best Friends Animal Society, to identify and remove unnecessary barriers to adoption, improve outreach and promotion for adoptable pets, strengthen rescue partnerships, and support practices that increase live outcomes.
