Urge your delegate to support TNR with Virginia Senate Bill 1390.
UPDATED 02/19/21: Despite strong support from the Virginia Senate, the House of Delegates recently voted to table SB 1390, meaning this legislation will not advance further during the current session.
SB 1390 would have clarified that trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs are legal throughout Virginia, helping facilitate lifesaving practices for Virginia's cats. If enacted, Virginia Senate Bill 1390 will allow animal shelters to operate humane and cost-effective trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs.
The legislation also adopts industry best practices by allowing community cats (who are not legally owned by anyone) to bypass the usual holding period and become immediately eligible for a TNR program. After being sterilized and vaccinated for rabies, they are returned to the location where they were found.
TNR is an animal-friendly, veterinarian-approved, cost-effective and common-sense method to humanely reduce Virginia's outdoor cat population.
