Hello, I’m Hyacinth! I'm a 2-year-old black beauty with silky fur, soulful eyes, and a gentle heart full of love. I have a calm, graceful way about me, but don’t let my elegant appearance fool you — I absolutely enjoy a little fun too. Feather toys? Fascinating. Zooming through the house for no apparent reason? Occasionally necessary. But my favorite thing is simply being close to my people, whether I’m curled beside you on the couch or quietly supervising your day from a sunny windowsill. I’m the kind of companion who makes a house feel peaceful and cozy. I’ll greet you with soft purrs, keep you company during lazy afternoons, and remind you every day that black cats are pure magic. At 2 years old, I’ve outgrown the wild kitten chaos, but I still have plenty of playful charm and affection to share. Best Friends is working to end the killing of dogs and cats in U.S. shelters in part by getting more pets out of shelters and into loving homes.

We’ve come a long way since the first known city reached no-kill in 1994, and now we’re closer than ever to making the entire country no-kill. Of the roughly 3,900 shelters operating in America today, 1,300 of them are not yet no-kill, but nearly half are close with 100 or fewer additional pets to be saved, and we know what to do to get them there.
