Best Friends in Houston
Working together to Save Them All
Best Friends in Houston works collaboratively with city shelters, local animal welfare organizations and passionate individuals to save the lives of pets in shelters in Houston and the surrounding areas.
To guide this work and help Houston become a no-kill city for cats and dogs, Best Friends launched the Coalition to Save Houston’s Pets in April of 2018 followed by a Community Cat Program, foster programs for dogs and cats, local adoption programs and an out of state transport program.

Home for the Holidays? What a better way to spread cheer then by opening your home to sloppy kisses and endless cuddles! During this holiday season we have a bold goal to place 75 cats and 50 dogs in temporary foster homes. Will you join us in our “Holiday Wishes” campaign and open your home for 3-4 weeks to one of these animals in need. These cats and dogs would love nothing more than to be in a warm foster home for the holidays instead of the shelter. **Click the Pets in need and Foster a Cat or Foster a dog buttons at bottom of page for more information.

Community and working cats
Have you heard about our working cats program? Working cats are ideal residents for stables, barns, ranches, breweries, warehouses, garden centers, marinas and backyards. These cats are FREE to those who have a safe, suitable place for these community cats to reside. Caretaker responsibilities include providing daily food and water, shelter, and veterinary care. If you are interested in having community cats placed on your property, or if you or someone you know would like to help a group of cats, please email HarrisCountyCCP@bestfriends.org or complete the online application at https://bit.ly/HOUworkingcats.
Harris County Community Cat Program
In partnership with the Veterinary Public Health division of Harris County Public Health, Best Friends in Houston operates the Harris County Community Cat Program, a humane and effective community-based program for reducing the number of free-roaming (stray and feral) cats in the county.
The program provides:
- Assistance with humanely trapping free-roaming cats so that they can be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, ear-tipped and returned to their home area (Ear-tipping is the universal symbol of a spayed or neutered outdoor cat)
- Assistance with resolving cat-related issues, such as spraying, fighting or unwanted litters
If you live in Harris County and are seeing stray cats, please feel free to contact us.
