Volunteer Spotlight: Ruth Weisman

volunteer Ruth
One of our first kitten nursery volunteers, Ruth also fosters kittens and mentors new volunteers.
By Best Friends Animal Society

Ruth was one of our very rst Kitten Nursery volunteers in the 2014 season. During her rst year she spent many late nights with the kittens, keeping the staff company. She is always enthusiastic about being involved and has been a huge asset to both our Kitten Nursery and Foster teams. Ruth has fostered 25 kittens in the past two years, even tackling the unsocial kittens that need a little more time and love. She’s a Kitten Nursery Mentor volunteer this year, as she was last year, and we’re so lucky to have her on our team!

BFAS: What is your favorite part about volunteering?

RW: I enjoy volunteering at the nursery because I am detail oriented and tiny kittens are so cute. My favorites are the bottle babies, because it seems less chaotic than the weaning kittens, almost meditative. I enjoy fostering for kitten snuggles and making cranky kittens into social cats.

BFAS: Do you have any pets at home?

RW: 3 Cats: 1 Calico, 1 black and white, and one grey tabby (who is a foster fail from 2014). They are all happy campers, and addicted to Friskies party mix treats.

BFAS: What do you do for fun outside of volunteering?

RW: I enjoy reading, knitting and sewing. When the weather is nice i like to hike.

BFAS: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

RW: Tough choice...Top three in no particular order are London, just because I like it there and there is a ton of great theatre; Okinawa, Japan because of the scuba diving; and Maine because of the landscape and strange but wonderful people.

BFAS: Aside from cats and dogs, do you have any other favorite animals?

RW: Tiny aquatic frogs. They are my tank animal of choice.

BFAS: What is your favorite holiday?

RW: Christmas, because my siblings and I get into a lot of shenanigans when we are all together.

BFAS: What is one piece of advice you have for other volunteers?

RW: My advice for Nursery volunteers is to nd your own rhythm with in the “procedures”. Once you do that it becomes so much easier to get things done and enjoy it. (It also helps to come often... practice will make it so you don’t feel like you’re constantly forgetting something).
