Best Friends in New York
Since 2010, Best Friends Animal Society has been working collaboratively with city shelters, local animal welfare organizations, and passionate advocates and volunteers to save the lives of pets in shelters in New York City and the surrounding tri-state area.
As part of this work, Best Friends has hosted major pet adoption and fundraising events in New York, such as Strut your Mutt, along with smaller innovative adoption programs and partnerships, such as pet adoption pop-ups and retailer-based adoption events. Best Friends also runs a lifesaving pet foster program in collaboration with Animal Care Centers of New York City and was one of the lead animal welfare organizations in the effort to rescue animals after Superstorm Sandy.
In August 2015, Best Friends secured a SoHo-based location for the new Best Friends Lifesaving Center in the heart of Manhattan. Opened in 2017, the center serves as a prominent East Coast counterpart to the trend-setting pet adoption centers run through Best Friends in Los Angeles. This new center will support New York City shelters and rescue groups working to find loving homes for cats and dogs in need, and will also serve as a place where animal lovers from all around the country can join Best Friends' national commitment to end the killing of dogs and cats in shelters.
In 2020, due to COVID-19, our New York program has shifted to an entirely foster-based system allowing for safe adoptions to continue to take place and lifesaving work to continue. New York has also combined with our Atlanta program, creating the East Coast Corridor, a new and innovative way to increase our impact and save more lives as we aim to make America a No Kill nation by 2025.
By working together in New York, we can Save Them All.
