Best Friends’ lifesaving work
While the Sanctuary remains the heart and soul of Best Friends, we now have lifesaving centers and programs in Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, New York City, Houston, Northwest Arkansas and other areas. In addition, through our national network of partners, lifesaving tactics are being implemented in shelters and rescue groups across the country.
As recently as 2016, nearly 1.5 million cats and dogs were killed in America just because shelters didn’t have the community support or the resources needed to save them. Best Friends is committed to changing that and to bringing the entire country to no-kill in 2025. Together, we can Save Them All.

Best Friends in Odessa, Texas
The Odessa region is one of five areas in Texas where the most killing in shelters is happening, and cats are among the most at risk.

No-Kill Los Angeles (NKLA)
Best Friends Animal Society has worked side-by-side with Los Angeles Animal Services (LAAS) and the No-Kill Los Angeles (NKLA) Coalition to go from a 56% save rate in 2012 to a 90% save rate in 2020. While navigating tremendous change and obstacles throughout the pandemic, the City of Los Angeles has been able to maintain a high save rate in 2022.
We are continuing to pivot our strategies, create programming sustainability, and help the public support the lifesaving of cats and dogs through foster, volunteering, and adoption.
No-Kill Utah (NKUT)
Best Friends has always believed that collaboration is the key to saving more lives, which is why we created the NKUT initiative and then the NKUT Coalition.
The coalition brings together shelters, rescue groups, other animal welfare organizations and passionate individuals with the goal of saving the lives of homeless pets in Utah.
